Retiring on Top: 10 Athletes that Retired During Their Primes

They weren’t hurt, getting older, or even doing badly, but these ten athletes retired during their primes for their own reasons.

Annika Sorenstam

She has set several all-time scoring records, including the lowest season scoring average, which was 68.6969, in 2004. Barry Sanders

Detroit, Michigan residents and Detroit Lions football fans everywhere certainly have fond memories of former running back Barry Sanders. He spent his entire professional career with the Lions, and retired when he was just short of the all-time rushing record. He is a member of both the college and professional football halls of fame. He never did win a Super Bowl with the Lions, but he was named to the Pro Bowl in all 10 of his seasons as a professional player.

Thanksgiving Day NFL Preview

Thanksgiving Day NFL Preview

After you are done watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and have eaten Thanksgiving dinner (and seconds, of course), it is football time. The NFL Thanksgiving Day schedule has been set since April 19th. Here is what you can look forward to:

Green Bay Packers at the Detroit Lions Ford Field

9:30 am PST on Fox

Watching the Packers play the Lions has become somewhat of a tradition in itself in recent years. This is the first time that the two teams will meet since Aaron Rodgers was knocked out with his second concussion last year. The Packers are slightly ahead in total yards per game, passing yards per game, rushing yards per game, and games won. The Lions are defensively a better team because they haven’t allowed as many total yards per game. They are so close that it should be a good match to watch. Players to watch on the Packers include Aaron Rodgers, James Starks, and Greg Jennings, while amongst the Lions, Matthew Stafford, Jahvid Best (or Kevin Smith, if Best is unable to play), and Calvin Johnson are players to look out for. The two teams will meet again on New Year’s Day this year. If you would like to watch or listen to the game while you are cooking, you can go to the NFL Game Center

Thanksgiving Movies for Your Netflix Queue

If you have a little time in between watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, watching football, and eating pie, here are ten great Thanksgiving movies to watch.

The New World 2005 PG-13

The New World tries to bring a little reality to the Pocahontas and John Smith story, including all the highs of romance and the lows of violence. This movie is good for anyone who feels a little too old for Pocahontas.

Pocahontas 1995 G

Disney animation tells this story of Pocahontas and Captain John Smith as they explore the New World together. The songs are beautifully done and so are the colors. This movie is good for anyone who is a little too young to watch The New World.

Home for the Holidays 1995 PG-13

This story is all about that trip home to visit wacky and sometimes intrusive relatives when things aren’t quite going your way. It has an all star cast including Holly Hunter, Robert Downey Jr., and Anne Bancroft. Anyone who has just had a Thanksgiving dinner with their own cast of characters will enjoy this one.

Surprising Midseason NFL Playoff Contenders

Surprising Midseason NFL Playoff Contenders

they are heading to the playoffs as a division champion or a wild-card contender.

San Francisco 49ers

At 8-1 the 49ers have already won two more games than they won last season. More importantly, with the clostest divisional opponent five games back, the Niners are a sure thing to make the playoffs this year. They have surprised opponents and experts alike with the stingy run defense and efficient offensive play, highlighted by the consistent solid play of their notoriously inconsistent quarterback Alex Smith. If Smith continues to avoid mistakes, the 49ers might be the only thing standing in the way of an undefeated Packers season.

Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions have a talented team this season, but they are playing in a tough league, which makes this team a surprising contender for the wild-card. The Green Bay Packers will most likely keep winning, and this will garner them the NFC North and probably even the number one spot in the NFC. The Detroit Lions will have a shot as a wild-card contender, but they will have to beat out the Chicago Bears. If the Lions can hold out against their two games against the Packers in the next part of the season (including one on Thanksgiving Day), they may be the ones heading to the playoffs. With an easier schedule, the Bears will have more of a chance of getting there though.

The Worst Sports Scandals of All Time

Nov 16, 2011 in Sports/Entertainment. 0 Comment

Last week, America was shocked by the allegation that Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky sexually abused several boys over the course of many years. Worse yet, according to the allegations, several key members within the Penn State family participated in a conspiracy to cover up Sandusky's actions, in an effort to avoid public scrutiny and evade appropriate legal action. Where does this scandal rank in the pantheon of sports scandals? Here's a look at the five worst sports scandals of all time.

5. Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Barry Bonds Steroid Scandal:

In the summer of 1998, fans were glued to their TV sets watching Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa go head-to-head as they chased after Roger Maris’ single-season home run record. Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs that year and broke the record. Barry Bonds went on to break that record with 73 home runs in 2001. Unfortunately, these records have been tainted by allegations and admissions of steroid use. Mark McGwire admitted in 2010 to using steroids to help him recover from injuries, including in 1998, the year he set the record. In 2009, it came out that Sammy Sosa failed a test for performance enhancing drugs in 2003, and he has continually been suspected of using steroids during his career. The scandal implemented almost all of the era's best players, including the era's best pitcher (Roger Clemens) and the era's best hitter (Barry Bonds), leaving baseball with an impossible decision--should MLB disqualify an entire era of baseball or allow verified cheaters to hold some of the most hallowed records in all of baseball? For the time being, the records, and the blemishes remain. Baseball has steadily declined in popularity since the scandal was made public.

Top 10 Box-Office Disasters that Modern Day Audiences Love

At the celebration for the Blu-Ray release of the 1998 comedy The Big Lebowski, Jeff Bridges was heralded for his iconic role as “The Dude.” This was far from how critics and audiences responded when the movie first came out. Maybe these ten box-office disasters were just ahead of their time.

The Big Lebowski (1998)

$5.53 million is all this comedy made at the box office when it was released, but it has since gone on to inspire the religion of ‘Dudeism.’

Citizen Kane (1941)

William Randolf Hearst threatened critics and studios when this thinly veiled biopic of the magnate came out, causing it to bomb horribly. It has gone on to being considered as one of the best movies ever made.

It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

This holiday classic directed by Frank Capra originally received “universally negative or at best dismissive” reviews. Today, however, it hardly seems like Christmas unless it is shown on TV.

Besides clips from previous shows you can find exclusive content and also interact with your favorite hosts. Here are the best places to catch up with your favorite late night shows:

Late Show With David Letterman

Give Your Golf Swing a Tune Up

Give Your Golf Swing a Tune Up

The genuine excitement of launching a golf ball so accurately that it lands where you can only choose in your wildest dreams, ranks as a number one goal with most avid golfers. This achievement begins with a good solid stance, and a swing with your favorite golf club. If you have a group of friends who spend Sunday mornings striving to impress each other with quickly improving skills and growing expertise in swinging a golf club, these tips will help you earn bragging rights.

Watch Your Form

You can literally watch your form by filming yourself taking a few practice swings in the backyard. It can be awkward to watch yourself on film. But by doing so, you may find out that when you come down to hit the ball, the actual position of your arms is different from what you think. Your setup may be different from your impact. You can also ask someone in the golf shop to take a quick look at how you are holding the club to give you some pointers; they may be able to see something you don’t. How you feel when you swing the club is important too, because any pain may be an indication that you aren’t quite doing something right.

Watching other golfers can also help you form the right technique and swing. In the offseason you can find online videos that will show you how to swing the right way. Golf Tips Video on Demand is a great place to start. eHow’s Sports channel on YouTube also features videos about how to improve your swing. Try entering your favorite player’s name as the search keyword on YouTube to come up with more videos that show you what proper technique looks like.

Arrested Development Returns!

Arrested Development Returns!

“Hey, brother!” Look what’s back! Arrested Development is hinting at a return to the small screen and a movie on the big screen!

If you haven’t seen it, Arrested Development has been described as irreverent and wry. Fans of the show love it for the humor and unique cast of characters. The show follows the Bluth family- a fictitious family living in California. The family was once wealthy, but after their company is investigated for fraud and their assets frozen, they have to adjust to a new life; including living together under one roof. This would be amusing in any family, but in the Bluth family it is positively hilarious, owing to their dysfunctional relationships.

The show is considered as an underdog comedy, but during its run on Fox between 2003 and 2006, the show gathered quite the cult following. When Arrested Development went away five years ago, people behind the shows untimely demise probably said, “I’ve made a huge mistake.” The show was dropped due to a lack of ratings. However, supporters of the show felt that it did not offer sufficient closure, and they were left wanting for more. The mistake of ending the show prematurely may be remedied soon though.

Mitchell Hurwitz (creator) and Ron Howard (director, producer, and narrator) have been dropping hints that they are talking about bringing the show back, and that new episodes and a movie are closer than ever to getting started. Hurwitz has said that a screenplay for the movie is about halfway done. However, the studio for the movie and TV series has not been chosen yet, and there is still the issue of rights.

Key Storylines for the 2011-2012 NHL Season

Key Storylines for the 2011-2012 NHL Season

The National Hockey League has entered its 95th year. The 2011 - 2012 season officially began on October 6. As you tune in to watch a televised game or enjoy terrific season tickets behind the penalty box, watch for these key storylines to emerge over the coming weeks and months.

Suspension

Head-shots and borderline hits, which are dangerous for any player to sustain, are not allowed in the NHL. During this year’s preseason games nine players were suspended, totaling 31 regular season games. Brendan Shanahan, the league’s Vice President of Hockey and Business Development, came down hard on the players and is expected to continue in the same fashion during the regular season.

Player retirement

This is expected to be the final season for Teemu Selanne and Nicklas Lidstrom. Both players are 41 years old. Selanne is in his 19th NHL season and has 637 goals under his belt. Known as the “Finnish Flash,” he has been a favorite for years. Lidstrom is one of the NHL’s best defensemen of all time. He has been on four championships teams.

Understanding the NFL's Blackout Policy

Oct 10, 2011 in Sports/Entertainment. 0 Comment

Understanding the NFL's Blackout Policy

If you want to watch your favorite NFL team play, the only guaranteed way is to buy a ticket and attend the game in person. The NFL’s blackout policy states that a home game cannot be televised locally if not sold out 72 hours before the start time of the game. The blackout is an effort to make fans buy tickets and watch the game in the stadium. The NFL want to compel local fans to pay to see the game, instead of just watching it for free on TV.

75 miles and 72 hours

This policy affects local markets within a seventy-five mile radius of the team’s home stadium. The present deadline is for 72 hours prior to the game, but if just a couple of thousand tickets remain to be sold, the league may extend it to 48 or even 24 hours prior to the game.

No reprieve for nationally-televised games

If a game is nationally televised on a network like NBC Sunday Night Football, the local stations are responsible for playing something else. This is unlikely to happen because the NFL and NBC choose games that are popular with teams that are doing well. If a game is due to be shown on cable, like ESPN, then cable and satellite providers are responsible for blacking out the network signals in the local area. If the game is supposed to be shown locally, the local station has to show another game during that time. The blackout rule even applies to the NFL mobile app.  This app will check the location of a user and not show a game in that area.

Notable DVD Releases for October

As Fall quickly approaches, check out these DVD releases and snuggle in at home for a movie night.

Fast Five, October 4

If you’ve ever wondered who would win in a battle between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, your answer is in this movie.  This movie isn’t all about cars and action though.  The surprisingly sweet movie also looks at loyalties, family, and friends.  Rio de Janeiro has been getting lots of attention lately as it is the location for the 2016 Summer Olympics.  The distinctive landscape of Rio de Janeiro plays a prominent role in this movie as the characters jump over roofs, drive through the streets and look out over the ocean.  With the appearance of Han Seoul-Oh (Sung Kang), we know that this movie is prior to the third installment of the film, Tokyo Drift.  The teaser clip during the credits also assures us that there will indeed be a sixth Fast and the Furious movie.  Pick up this movie so you are up on all the juicy happenings before the new movie is released.

Friday Night Lights: The Complete Series, October 4

Friday Night Lights ended their TV series this summer, but you can catch the entire series when it comes out on DVD this fall.  This series is based on the book of the same name, which is also the basis of the 2004 movie.  The plot focuses on a Texas high school football team.  This series is about so much more than football though.  It is about people’s lives including all the pressures, romances, and social issues involved.  If you can’t get enough of Kyle Chandler (see Super 8 below), you will love seeing him as the high school football coach.

The Race for American League MVP

The Race for American League MVP

The American League MVP race is heating up. As usual, Yankees and Red Sox top the list, but a few unusual candidates promise to make for some exciting theatrics down the home stretch. Here is a look at the top contenders for this year's American League MVP.

Adrian Gonzalez

In his first full season with the Red Sox, Gonzalez has carried his Boston teammates through several rough patches. He leads the league in batting at .343, has 94 RBI’s and has anchored the defense with his solid play at first base.

Jose Bautista

In a season noted for its modest power numbers, Bautista stands apart. He has led the league in home runs nearly all season. He currently has 36, and is batting .318. Playing for the lowly Blue Jays figures to hurt his chances, but as an individual performer, Bautista has been extraordinary.

Jacoby Ellsbury

Ellsbury is an all-around star. He is batting .313, has 22 home runs and 79 RBI’s to go with 33 stolen bases. Ellsbury has been on a tear since the All-Star break—with a league best 11 home runs.

Who Is the Highest Paid Actor in Hollywood?

Who Is the Highest Paid Actor in Hollywood?

The title of “highest-paid actor in Hollywood” is the most elusive in the entertainment industry. For years, Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, and Tom Hanks dominated the list. Now, a new breed of actors are taking their place. Here are the five highest paid actors in Hollywood according to Forbes Magazine.

1. Leonardo DiCaprio - $77 million

After starring in the highest grossing film of all time (Titanic), Leo’s earning power took a meteoric rise. Over the last several years, DiCaprio has collaborated with big name directors like Spielberg and Scorsece, solidifying his reputation as an elite actor and steadily increasing his box office appeal. In the last year, Leonardo DiCaprio has starred in Shutter Island and Inception, two films that earned a combined $1.2 billion at the box office. DiCaprio took home an estimated $77 million for his contributions.

2. Johnny Depp - $50 million

Johnny Depp is a reluctant box-office star. After years of dodging the spotlight with offbeat projects like Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood, Depp finally cashed, agreeing to play Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The hugely successful franchise has made over $3.7 billion, $50 million of which was paid to Depp over the last year.
