Don’t Assume

Find out what your customers want. Don’t assume you know what they need. Talk to potential customers and find out what their expectations are. What are they looking for in your type of business? You can start with a small product and ask questions of customers. You can take a survey, or send out emails to get opinions. You may think no one will respond, but customers will give their opinions if they believe they will be heard.

Train Your Employees

Regardless of whether you have two employees or two-hundred, they need to be trained on customer service. You may think they should know how to provide good customer service, but you need to train them to your expectations. You should have standards in place that everyone is expected to follow. These should be concrete and easy to track, so you know which areas are on target and which ones can be improved.

Write Down Your Resolutions 
Simply writing down your resolutions and putting them in a place that you will regularly see, can help you reaffirm your goals.
 
Narrow Down Your Focus
You may have ten resolutions for this year, but if you feel overwhelmed, consider putting off a couple of your goals for a few months. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you don’t have to learn something new, get out of debt, volunteer, and get organized all in one day. The year is twelve months long, so you can put off a couple of goals, or simply break your resolutions into steps. You will have a better chance of achieving at least some of your goals. You may also want to consider how your resolutions restrict or complement one another.

Recapping the 2011 Holiday Sale Season

The holiday season usually translates into big business for retailers. During the holiday shopping season (November and December) merchants can make up to forty percent of their annual revenue. The sale season also provides insights about how people are spending their money. This holiday sale season showed the income divide in the U.S.

Compared to last year, high-end stores did well this season. On the other hand, stores geared toward shoppers in the middle and lower income brackets did not do as well. This disparity can be attributed to the divide between the affluent and less affluent in the U.S. Unemployment, together with an uncertain economy and a shrinking middle class, may be to blame for the lack of high sales in some stores. In December, Nordstrom had an 8.7% increase in revenue at stores open at least a year, Macy’s saw a 6.2% increase, and Saks had a 5.8% increase. J.C. Penney had just a 0.3% increase, Kohl’s had a 0.1% decline, and Target had a 1.6% gain, which was lower than what they were expecting. 

Besides the economy and the shrinking middle class, there are other reasons why consumers may not have spent as much money this past sales season. Due to the mild winter in most states, the demand for cold-weather merchandise like coats, hats, gloves, and scarves was lower than it has been in previous years. Now that stores are starting to receive spring items, cold-weather items will likely be placed on sale. People also put off shopping to earlier in the season since Christmas fell on a Sunday this year.

It is often called the elevator pitch because it is only supposed to last the length of an elevator ride. You pitch your business to a potential customer and get their attention in only sixty seconds. How can you do that? Here are four tips that can help you win over your potential customers in less than a minute.

Relate to Your Customers

People only care about what affects them. At least when it comes to products and services that they pay for, this is true. In order to get their attention you have to let them know how your company or business can benefit them.  

Figure out what you do, and how it can benefit them. What problem will it solve or how will it improve their lives. If you look at your business through the eyes of your customers, you will know what to say to catch their interest.

Be Enthusiastic

If you are passionate about what you do, show it to others and they will get excited too. If you have the best method of doing something, let them know that. Get excited and it will be contagious. However, don’t fake it, or they will see that too. People can tell when you’re being sincere or just acting like a salesperson reciting a memorized speech.
