Best Super Bowl Ads of All Time

For many people, the best part of yesterday's Super Bowl were the ads. Over the years, some of the greatest ads in advertising history have taken place on Super Bowl Sunday. Here's a look at some of the all-time greats.

Apple 1984 “1984” Commercial

In a time when Apple wasn’t a household name and people weren’t attached to their iPods, iPads, and Mac computers, Apple had to actually run commercials to raise their brand awareness. This is considered one of the most inventive commercials of all time. It emulates the classic novel 1984, but then shatters that image both literally and figuratively. The commercial even had a superstar director, Ridley Scott, who directed the movie Blade Runner. In the tradition of Apple’s other famous unveilings, Apple ends the commercial by saying, “On January 24th, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh. And you’ll see why 1984 won’t be like “1984.”

Coca Cola 1980 “Mean Joe Greene” Commercial

The only thing that could warm the cockles of Mean Joe Greene’s heart? An ice cold Coca Cola. So much so that he even gives the kid who is in the tunnel a jersey. The commercial became iconic in sports advertising history. While making Coke look great, it also succeeded in an image boost for Joe Greene, an intimidating player from the Pittsburgh Steelers defense.

Budweiser 2000 “Wassup!” Commercial

Beer commercials are always a hit, since they know the people watching are drinking the beer synonymous with the Super Bowl. They have had many classics including the Clydesdale horses, the “Bud-weis-er” frogs, and of course, “wassup.” The magic of their commercials extends past Super Bowl Sunday when everyone is still repeating the phrases the next day (and the next year). Their tribute in the form of “Clydesdale Respect” was also a sweet classic that will live on.

VW 2011 “The Force” Commercial

The whimsy of childhood, Star Wars, and parenthood is perfect for this commercial that introduces a new Volkswagen feature that allows people to start their cars with the touch of a button.

Monster.com 1999 “When I Grow Up” Commercial

Children are known for their lofty goals and their inspirational thinking that they can achieve anything when they grow up. This commercial flips that notion on its head though and instead shows different children who are striving for…well, less than desirable goals, but the same things that happen to people every day. With this commercial, Monster.com hoped to return people back to their original inspiration points. Looking at their popularity and household name, it is clear that many people went to the site looking for new jobs that would do just that. Time Magazine declared the commercial as “The Best Television of 1999.”
