How Much Sleep Do Kids Really Need?

For parents, novice and veteran alike, the best part of the day is when the house is quiet, as the kids sleep soundly in their beds. It’s a time of relaxation and recovery from the day’s busy events. But one thing’s for sure, there’s not enough of that nighttime peace and quiet happening. Kids, scientists say, need much more sleep than they get. And who are we kidding; parents need that time of rest just as much as kids!

While the exact amount of sleep needed can vary based on individual needs, there are certain guidelines parents can easily follow to make sure their kids get the rest they need. Age is a major factor to consider when putting your baby to sleep. Use the following as a guideline for how much sleep your child should get on average:

1-4 weeks old require 15-16 hours of sleep per day. Newborns need the most sleep. Unfortunately for parents, newborns tend to have erratic sleeping patterns since they’ve not yet developed a regular sleeping habit. Let your newborn sleep in short 1-2 hour bursts on and off throughout the day, until they can develop their circadian rhythm, or biological clock.

1-12 months old require 12-14 hours of sleep per day. After about the first or second month, your baby will develop more regular sleeping patterns. Confusion between day and night typically wears off by this time, so babies sleep for longer periods (up to 6 hours) at nighttime. For most infants, 15 hours of sleep is ideal.

Hot New Trends in the Workplace

If you’ve just graduated from college or simply looking to get back to the workplace after raising your children, it’s important to see what’s happening in the business world. You will find that many of the traditional styles of doing business are gone; replaced with modern ideas in a modern world. To compete with other job applicants, it pays to know what to expect.

Technology

Technological advances are the reason behind many of the changes. How you conduct business has changed a lot in the last ten years. You no longer sit in an office behind closed doors. Instead, many employees are on the go, using laptops and mobile devices for their work.

Even email is becoming obsolete with faster methods of communication such as text messaging and social networking. Instead of working in the same office as your co-workers, you may be collaborating online with people from all over the world.

Limited Funds? Prioritize These 3 Home Repairs

For a new homeowner, the amount of work and maintenance that goes into a home can be unexpected and expensive. Prioritizing home repairs is necessary when the list of repairs and replacements extends beyond your budget. The following four home repairs should be your top priority because they can quickly devolve into unsafe, unsound, and expensive disasters.

Electrical repairs

Signs – Faulty electrical wiring and connections, perhaps the most dangerous of all potential problems, should be repaired quickly. Bad electrical systems can lead to electrical fires and electrocution. If your circuit breakers trip frequently or your lights dim when you plug in a vacuum, it’s time to bring out an electrician. The electrician can do a spot check to ensure that outlets are safe and the wiring works.

Cost – Although it depends on the age and quality of the house, rewiring costs can be anywhere from $4000 to $10,000. If the electrician finds something that needs replacement, there is no time to waste.

How to Prevent – One way to prevent wire corrosion and circuit damage is to switch circuit breakers off and on once a year. You should take all necessary precautions to prevent outages and damage to your home by electrical fire.

7 Easy Ways to Update Your Kitchen

The kitchen is usually the busiest room in the house. Every morning kids wolf down bowls of cereal and parents bustle through for coffee. After school or work, everyone congregates in the kitchen for snacks, or to help prepare dinner. As a hub of everyday activity, it’s important to keep the kitchen lively and fresh. The following are easy ways you can keep your kitchen from becoming out-dated and boring.

Add table lamps – Table lamps provide soft lighting, inviting a warm atmosphere. Pick up some table lamps to put on a counter or a shelf to gently bathe the room in warm light, rather than have bright overhead lights on all the time.

New gadgets and inventions – People are rather genius when it comes to inventing the next must-have kitchen gadget. From coffee mugs with smart lids to juicers, new gadgets can add an extra level of comfort and convenience to your overall kitchen experience.

Painting cabinetry – A simple fresh coat of paint can totally reinvent a kitchen. Painting the insides of the cabinet with a contrasting color can be a striking way to refresh your kitchen. Painting cabinets can be tricky because they have many awkward corners and edges. By planning ahead and following these tips, you can be sure to have an easy experience refreshing your cabinets.

How to Register Your Business Name

1.  Find Out if You Can Use It.

You must check to make sure the name you have chosen is not already legally protected.  If you choose a name that is already protected by a trademark, you will be required to change it and can end up with a lawsuit.

Check with the state where you will be conducting business to make sure the name is free.  You can do this on the state’s website and look at their database of company names.  You should also visit the US Patent and Trademark Office website for their free search tool.  You can check to see if your business name is listed.

Save Money with a Space Heater

One of the ways in which people try to save money on heating their homes is using a space heater. Many advertisers promise that you will cut your heating bills if you purchase their brand of space heater. There are several things to look for in a heater if you plan to purchase one.

Heating Ability

The first thing that people look for is how much area the heater can cover. You will find heaters that can cover a large amount of square footage, while others will only heat a small room. Find out the area that you want heated, and buy a unit accordingly. There is no reason to buy one that can heat more than what you need. The idea with space heaters is to heat one room, and leave the thermostat down on the other areas of your home. If you try to heat too much area, you will end up spending more money even with a space heater.

Safety

Today’s models use several features to make their unit safe. This is essential because space heaters account for a large number of fires in homes every year, and you don’t want yours to be one of them.

Mortgage Applications Surging

Feb 08, 2012 in Homeowner. 0 Comment

Mortgage Applications Surging

The Mortgage Bankers Association reported that there was a surge of mortgage loan applications of 23% in the week ending January 13. This was up 23.1% from the previous week. Refinancing activity was up to 26.4% during the week ending January 13, which was the highest level since early August and comprised 82.2% of all mortgage activity. New mortgage applications climbed 10.3% week-over-week.

This surge is primarily due to new record low interest rates. The rates for 30-year and 15-year fixed loans fell to 3.89% and 3.16% in the week ending January 13. The vice president of research and economics at the Mortgage Bankers Association reported, “Interest rates dropped last week due to continuing anxieties regarding the fragile economic situation in Europe.” The interest rates for most loans fell, but the interest rates for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage with jumbo balances rose from 4.36% to 4.40%.

Most people were taking advantage of the new lower interest rates to refinance their existing home loans instead of purchasing new homes. The chief economist for Fannie Mae, Doug Duncan, said, “[Home] sales are a lot less interest-rate sensitive than people think.” There are often many other factors that go into choosing a new home (including newly built homes and previously owned homes) than just lower interest rates, while people who are refinancing are happy in their homes and have already made a lot of those tough choices.

How to Use the Business Card in Today’s Digital World

There are differing opinions on whether the traditional business card is obsolete in today’s digital society.  With social networks and online profiles, does anyone even need a business card anymore?  While not everyone would agree, many people think it does still have a place.  The key is to update your business card and know how to use it along with digital media.

1.  Introduce Yourself

The business card has traditionally been used to introduce you to prospective clients or other business associates you may later do business with.  That is still a valid use for today’s business card.  However, to make it effective, it needs to contain your email address, website, and any other digital information you may have.

Most people will use it to add your email address to their list of contacts on their email account.  They may also bookmark your website before they set the card aside.  It is still a handy way to get your information out in a quick, quiet way.  It will only be useful if it contains your electronic information since that is how more people are communicating today.

Five Ways to Create a Beautiful Lawn

Five Ways to Create a Beautiful Lawn

A beautiful lawn is the envy of many homeowners who think it is impossible to have one of their own. It is not as difficult as one would expect if they follow these five simple rules.

1.  Know Your Lawn.

Know what kind of grass you have before you attempt to treat it. If you have bare spots and you are trying to grow new grass, find out what is already in the surrounding area, or what will grow well in your type of climate. You can always talk to your local agricultural extension office to find the best grass for your area.

2.  Learn How to Mow.

Set your mower to a higher setting. Yes, this will mean you have to mow more often, but it will make your grass healthier, especially during dry times. It also allows the roots to penetrate deeper so they can withstand droughts. Moisture is also held better in taller grass; the grass will retain the water longer when you irrigate your lawn.

How to Get Out of a Bad Mood

How to Get Out of a Bad Mood

Everyone gets in a bad mood every now and then. It can be something that happened at work or at home, or, it was just the way they woke up. It could be from lack of sleep or stress. Whatever the cause, it is unpleasant for the person as well as for those around them. There are things you can do to improve your mood.

Figure Out the Cause

Take a break and figure out the reason for your bad mood. You may not be able to fix the problem, but it can help you deal with it. If someone at work upset you and you realize it, you are less likely to vent it out on your family at home.

If there is something you can do to fix the problem, go ahead with it. You can talk to the co-worker who hurt your feelings and let them know what they did. Just taking action may put you in a better mood. If you can’t take care of the problem, it can be helpful to find someone to confide in.
