Banks Paying Homeowners to Sell Their Homes

Banks Paying Homeowners to Sell Their Homes

Since banks want to cut their losses, they offer cash packages as an incentive for delinquent homeowners to sell their houses. Foreclosure cases can be dragged out for years. Consequently, the house in dispute falls into disrepair. In these cases, the banks can be out thousands of dollars. To avoid costly expenses and devalued houses, banks offer cash to get people motivated to sell their houses quickly and efficiently.

Process of short sales

Short sales means selling a house for less than what it’s worth. In short sales, the bank forgives the outstanding debt owed on the house. Banks have been reluctant to accept short sale deals in the past. However, compared to losses on foreclosures, short sales prove less damaging. A person behind on their loan payments can be offered a way out, though they still lose money on the investment made into the house. On average, short sales receive a discount of about 14 percent, which is still less than the 22 percent for foreclosures.

Many factors determine if a bank will offer an incentive to homeowners to sell their houses, including where the homeowner resides and which bank was used for the loan. Because of its lengthy foreclosure process, Florida, in particular, is known to be one of the states where banks offer cash handouts. Both Wells Fargo and Bank of America have run test programs in Florida, offering up to $20,000 to homeowners to sell rather than enter foreclosure. Those programs may be expanded to other locations. There are similar incentive packages being offered in states such as New York, Washington, Arizona, and California.

Does Overeating Cause Memory Loss?

Does Overeating Cause Memory Loss?

Ingesting more than your fair share at the dinner table could prove harmful not just to your health, but to your memory. In a research project conducted by the Mayo Clinic, scientists studied the potential correlation of eating habits and memory loss in a group of elderly people living in Olmstead County, Minnesota.

Dr. Yonas Geda, the author of the study, took surveys of more than 1200 geriatrics to compile the data for the report. After the study, participants filled out a food questionnaire and the scientists took images of their brain. The doctors found a definitive trend - as calorie intake increased, so did the risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Dividing the data among three groups, the scientists determined that those who consumed the lowest amount of calories had the least risk of developing MCI. Those who consumed approximately between 2300 and 6000 calories per day, more than doubled their risk for developing memory loss. MCI is commonly found in elderly people with symptoms of memory loss or dementia. MCI is sometimes a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease

Geda admits that these preliminary results need to be buffered by more studies, including data on food variation and calories spent in physical activity. He particularly warns that neither malnutrition nor starvation is recommended as a preventative against memory loss. Geda does recommend a diet that is balanced and moderate. As with weight gain, heart disease, and other problems, it’s not the eating, but excessive eating that causes the most trouble.

Top Choices for Fuel Efficient Cars

With the price of gas increasing in many areas of the country, fuel efficiency is one of the top considerations for many car buyers. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has just released the list of top 10 fuel efficient cars. Here are some of the highlights.

Toyota

If it seems like Toyota is at the top of almost every list, it’s because it probably is. In this list, not one, but three Toyotas made it. The Toyota Camry Hybrid LE gets 43 mpg with city driving and 39 mpg on the highway. It is the only mid-sized car to get over 40 miles per gallon, which means you don’t have to sacrifice space for fuel efficiency.

The Toyota Prius v is in seventh place on the list and is known for its cargo room. The Toyota Prius comes in fifth, and is the only Toyota to get over 50 mpg - 51 mpg for city driving and 49 mpg for the highway. It is the best-selling hybrid in the world.

Honda

Honda also registered multiple entries in the top 10 list. The Honda Insight stands at number nine on the list and gets over 40 mpg for both city and highway driving. At number six is the Honda Civic Hybrid. It contains a lithium ion battery instead of the old nickel type. It also has a bigger engine for more power.

Easy Ways to Go Green

The smallest changes can make a world of difference. If you’re committed to living an environment-friendly lifestyle, follow these easy tips to lessen your impact on the planet and live a healthier life.

Use Green Cleaners

Harsh chemicals have proven to increase the amounts of toxic carbons and gases in our ever-diminishing atmosphere. Throw out your chemical cleaners and replace them with green household cleaners. Search for plant-based products. Alternative, natural products decrease allergens in the air, minimizing your risk for developing diseases such as asthma.

Meatless Mondays

Did you know it takes ten times as much energy to produce meat than it does to produce plant-based food? Moreover, raising livestock generates more greenhouse gases than driving a car. By making a promise to eat no meat for one day a week, you can lessen your impact on the environment. You can try making vegetable lasagna, salads, or other nutritional, vegetarian recipes.

Save Money with a Space Heater

One of the ways in which people try to save money on heating their homes is using a space heater. Many advertisers promise that you will cut your heating bills if you purchase their brand of space heater. There are several things to look for in a heater if you plan to purchase one.

Heating Ability

The first thing that people look for is how much area the heater can cover. You will find heaters that can cover a large amount of square footage, while others will only heat a small room. Find out the area that you want heated, and buy a unit accordingly. There is no reason to buy one that can heat more than what you need. The idea with space heaters is to heat one room, and leave the thermostat down on the other areas of your home. If you try to heat too much area, you will end up spending more money even with a space heater.

Safety

Today’s models use several features to make their unit safe. This is essential because space heaters account for a large number of fires in homes every year, and you don’t want yours to be one of them.

Create an Oasis in Your Home with Feng Shui

Feng Shui is an old Chinese system designed to improve one’s life by arranging things according to the laws of nature.  Many people use this idea to design their homes.  If you are interested in creating an oasis in your home using Feng Shui, here are some tips to help you.

1.  Get Rid of Clutter.

One of the most important things you can do to establish a sense of peace inside your home is to get rid of excess items that you don’t use or love.  This is not just a principle of Feng Shui; it pertains to any type of design you use.  However, it will help to create more energy in your home, which is the basis of Feng Shui.  You will be able to find things you need easier and won’t be dragged down by mounds of stuff.

2.  Create Quality Light.

Light improves energy whether it is artificial or natural.  Make sure you have access to good lighting in the rooms of your home.  If you have several windows, use light curtains that can be opened to allow natural light into the room.  If you have a room that does not have much natural lighting, buy lamps and bright lighting.

Using the Fitbit to Lose Weight

Fitbit is a company that utilizes new technology to create products that motivate and assist people to do just that.

Tracking Exercise

The Fitbit and Fitbit Ultra are small devices that you can fasten to your clothing to track different activities. You can track how many steps you have taken, or how many miles you have traveled on foot. This allows you to see how active you are each day.

The Fitbit contains an accelerometer and an altimeter to track your activity. The accelerometer works like a pedometer to measure your steps in various exercises. The altimeter tracks your ascent to measure steps climbed. Critics say that it will track any leg movement, so it is not as accurate as it may appear.

How to Use the Business Card in Today’s Digital World

There are differing opinions on whether the traditional business card is obsolete in today’s digital society.  With social networks and online profiles, does anyone even need a business card anymore?  While not everyone would agree, many people think it does still have a place.  The key is to update your business card and know how to use it along with digital media.

1.  Introduce Yourself

The business card has traditionally been used to introduce you to prospective clients or other business associates you may later do business with.  That is still a valid use for today’s business card.  However, to make it effective, it needs to contain your email address, website, and any other digital information you may have.

Most people will use it to add your email address to their list of contacts on their email account.  They may also bookmark your website before they set the card aside.  It is still a handy way to get your information out in a quick, quiet way.  It will only be useful if it contains your electronic information since that is how more people are communicating today.

Five Ways to Create a Beautiful Lawn

Five Ways to Create a Beautiful Lawn

A beautiful lawn is the envy of many homeowners who think it is impossible to have one of their own. It is not as difficult as one would expect if they follow these five simple rules.

1.  Know Your Lawn.

Know what kind of grass you have before you attempt to treat it. If you have bare spots and you are trying to grow new grass, find out what is already in the surrounding area, or what will grow well in your type of climate. You can always talk to your local agricultural extension office to find the best grass for your area.

2.  Learn How to Mow.

Set your mower to a higher setting. Yes, this will mean you have to mow more often, but it will make your grass healthier, especially during dry times. It also allows the roots to penetrate deeper so they can withstand droughts. Moisture is also held better in taller grass; the grass will retain the water longer when you irrigate your lawn.
