Six Most Entertaining Athletes of All Time

We enjoy the competition and get a thrill from impressive plays, but what sticks in our minds long after the lights go dark, are the athletes. The names we’ll remember years later may not be the greatest of all time, but they are the most entertaining. Here is a list of six such athletes who entertain us the most.

Hulk Hogan

Whether you love him or hate him, you will remember him. WWF has gotten a reputation for being a joke, but it cannot hide the personality of Hulk Hogan. It’s obvious that his fans can’t get enough of him from his television and movie appearances, not to mention his reality show.

Muhammad Ali

Ali took boxing to a new level and brought in new fans to the sport. His personality was even greater than the sport he played. His rhymes and trash talk became as anticipated as the event itself. Ali was named the “Sportsman of the Century” by Sports Illustrated, and “The Sports Personality of the Century” by the BBC.

The Real Cost of Cheap Electronics

The Real Cost of Cheap Electronics

Many electronics manufacturers get their products made overseas to reduce costs and provide savings to their consumers. However, many of these overseas factories are nothing more than sweatshops that impose long hours, low pay, and unsafe working conditions. Critics have blamed companies such as Apple for the horrible conditions that workers have to endure.

The Problem

Electronics corporations hire manufacturing companies in countries such as China to build their products in a short amount of time for a low cost. Many of these companies then force workers to work long hours to produce a certain number of items, disregarding safety in favor of speed. Workers may be mistreated by management and not allowed breaks, even to go to the bathroom. Suicides at these companies have alerted the outside world that something needs to be done.

The largest electronics manufacturer, Foxconn, produces nearly all of Apple’s products, along with almost every other major electronics company. In 2010, there was a string of 14 suicides at Foxconn due to the conditions at the plant. According to one of the activists at a watch company, Foxconn is not even one of the worst.

The job market has been on everyone’s mind since 2008 when the U.S. economy tanked and the global economy nosedived. With painstaking progress, the economy is showing signs of success. Employment opportunities, while certainly not abundant, are on the rise in particular geographic regions and industries.

Locations with Job Opportunities

According to a survey by the ManpowerGroup, the cities with the most job opportunities are Cape Coral and Lakeland, both located in Florida. Both these cities have net hiring outlooks of around 17 percent. The other top 5 locations where you are likely to find a job include Houston, Texas, Des Moines, Iowa, Phoenix, Arizona, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Atlanta, Georgia.

In Canada, the provinces of AlbertaBritish Columbia, and Prince Edward Island saw the biggest increase in jobs. The industries which gained jobs were in natural resources, including forestry, fishing, quarrying, mining, gas, and oil.

7 Easy Ways to Update Your Kitchen

The kitchen is usually the busiest room in the house. Every morning kids wolf down bowls of cereal and parents bustle through for coffee. After school or work, everyone congregates in the kitchen for snacks, or to help prepare dinner. As a hub of everyday activity, it’s important to keep the kitchen lively and fresh. The following are easy ways you can keep your kitchen from becoming out-dated and boring.

Add table lamps – Table lamps provide soft lighting, inviting a warm atmosphere. Pick up some table lamps to put on a counter or a shelf to gently bathe the room in warm light, rather than have bright overhead lights on all the time.

New gadgets and inventions – People are rather genius when it comes to inventing the next must-have kitchen gadget. From coffee mugs with smart lids to juicers, new gadgets can add an extra level of comfort and convenience to your overall kitchen experience.

Painting cabinetry – A simple fresh coat of paint can totally reinvent a kitchen. Painting the insides of the cabinet with a contrasting color can be a striking way to refresh your kitchen. Painting cabinets can be tricky because they have many awkward corners and edges. By planning ahead and following these tips, you can be sure to have an easy experience refreshing your cabinets.

Previewing the 2012 NBA All-Star Game

Even with the shortened season, fans will still have a chance to enjoy their favorite players in the NBA All-Star game.  It is set for February 26, 2012 in Orlando, Florida at the Amway Center.  The center is the home of the Orlando Magic and this is the second time the city gets to host the All-Star game.  The first was 20 years ago when Magic Johnson came back to play after being diagnosed with AIDS and won the MVP trophy for the game.

This year, starting players were picked by fan votes with them having the choice of two guards, two forwards, and one center.  Reserve players were then picked by head coaches in their own conferences.  However, a coach could not pick his own player.  The reserves have two guards, two forwards, and one center, with two extra players in any positions.

Notable Players of the Eastern Conference

Several names are in the running for the season’s MVP award as expected.  Derrick Rose, Dwight Howard, and LeBron James are three of the top starters for the eastern conference.  They are joined by Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony.  There are 3 first time selections on the reserves.

5 Reasons to Ditch your iPad for an Android Tablet

5 Reasons to Ditch your iPad for an Android Tablet

Anyone who owns an Android tablet will recognize its convenience, simplicity, and best of all, affordability relative to the iPad. As the most popular mobile platform with over 200 million users in 2011, Android outperforms rival tablets in the following five ways.

1. Price and affordability

To put it concisely, the Android tablet is more affordable than the iPad. Android tablets undercut Apple’s prices by $200 or more. The latest Android tablet on the market, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, gives you 32 GB of flash memory at a cost of $499. For the same amount of memory, you would pay at least $100 more for Apple’s iPad. Additionally, Android tablets are not limited to just one model. Because there are many models available, consumers have more choice. The Android tablet is available in four sizes, ranging from the smallest which is 5 inches, to the largest which is 10 inches.

2. Open source software

The tech behemoth Google maintains the Android software. Following their principles of open source technology, Android is available to download for free. Many of the Android tablet applications are also free.

Ways to Use the New Neon Trend in Your Home

Ways to Use the New Neon Trend in Your Home

According to interior design experts, you can expect to see bold colors decorating homes in 2012. From bright bursts of color to vivid rooms, you will see yellows, pinks, and greens in fluorescents taking over. If you are not a person who enjoys bold décor, how can you incorporate the new design and still stay true to your personality? Here are some tips on how to incorporate the new trend into your home without letting it take over.

Think of One Item

Instead of spreading color all over your room, look for one brightly colored accent piece. It can be a lamp shade or a throw over a couch or chair. It may be a bold painting in an otherwise muted room. Choosing one item to accent in a bold color will add a touch of brightness without being too overwhelming.

Look at Your Focal Point

The easiest place to dress up with a splash of color is the spot you want to draw people’s eyes to; it can be a fireplace, a window, a coffee table, or even a bookcase. You can even change the focal point in a room by adding a colorful object in an unexpected place. For instance, a lime green vase on a floating shelf in a dark corner would draw everyone’s attention.

Best TV Theme Songs of All Time

The best TV theme songs tell a story and introduce what the show is all about. Here are the top ten theme songs that are instantly recognizable, set the tone for the whole TV show, and will be in your head for the rest of the day.

Cheers

The sweet and poignant theme song opened with the title, “Where Everybody Knows Your Name.” Indeed, over the course of the show, people came to know all the characters and followed their lives inside the bar. Gary Portnoy, who created the iconic song, also created the song “Every Time You Turn Around” for the TV show Punky Brewster.

MASH

The theme song for this show perfectly reflects the black comedy of the show. Even the title of the song by Johnny Mandel is haunting: “Suicide is Painless.” The song was originally used in the Robert Altman movie that inspired the TV series. The show used an instrumental version without the lyrics, which just added to the melancholy feel of the song.

Clever Ways to Cash in on New Health Care Legislation

Health-care reform law can be difficult to understand, but when you understand it, there are many ways that you can save yourself and your family some big money. Several provisions are now going into effect and several others are often underutilized because patients don’t understand their options. Here are some ways to make sure you get the most benefit from new health care legislation.

1. Make Sure Your Adult Children are covered

Adult children may now stay on their parents’ health insurance until they turn 26. Also, they do not have to be enrolled in school to gain the benefit of their parents’ health insurance policy. Before this legislation went into effect, adult children had to be enrolled in school full-time, or be under the age of 21. Parents usually have to wait to add their children to their plans until the open enrollment for insurance coverage in the fall, but there may be exceptions that would allow adult children to be added in the middle of the year. Your insurer or employer will be able to tell you more.

2. Have Preventative Tests, Procedures, and Vaccines Done

Depending on your age, you may be eligible to receive screenings, tests and vaccines without having to pay a deductible or co-payment. These screenings may include immunizations, diet counseling for adults with a higher risk for chronic disease, tobacco cessation interventions, and depression screenings. You can consult your insurer and check Healthcare.gov for more information.

Super Bowl Preview

Super Bowl Preview

The biggest sporting event of the year is just days away. Here's what you can expect when the Giants take on the Patriots on Super Bowl Sunday.

Peaking at the right time

The Giants finished the regular season with a lackluster 9-7 record, barely qualifying for the playoffs.  Throughout the first half of the season, the Giants were inconsistent, despite the often brilliant play of quarterback Eli Manning. In the second half of the season, the offense began to click as breakout receiver Victor Cruz came out of nowhere to set a franchise record for receiving yards in a season (1,536). The defense, led by Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul came alive late in the season, providing one of the most feared pass rushes in the league. In the last few weeks, the Giants have been getting better and better on both sides of the ball, and seem poised to play their best football when it matters most this Sunday.

Moving target

The Patriots have looked exceptional on offense all year long. Tom Brady opened the season with a 500+ yard passing performance and didn't slow down all year long, finishing the season with 5,235 yards, 39 touchdowns, and a 105.6 quarterback rating. Early in the year, wide receiver Wes Welker looked unstoppable, breaking small 5-yard out patterns for touchdowns. But, as the season progressed, the spotlight shifted to tight end Rob Gronkowski. Gronkowski set NFL single season records for a tight end in receiving touchdowns (17), total touchdowns (18), and receiving yards (1,327).

Five Tax Deductions for Your Home Based Business

Five Tax Deductions for Your Home Based Business

If you run a home based business, it can be confusing what deductions you can claim as business expenses. Thinking about an IRS audit can be scary. If you follow these guidelines, you can deduct legitimate expenses from your income.

1.  Your Home Office

This does not mean that you can count the family room if you write articles while watching television. What it means is that you must have a space that is designated as your home office, and used for no other purpose. It does not have to be an entire room; it can even be a section of the family room. The basic rule is that it should be obvious to anyone that it is your office.

If you measure the square footage of your office and divide it by the total square footage of your home, you will know the percentage that you can deduct from utilities and other home expenses.

2.  Auto Expenses

If you use your car for business travel, you can count mileage and parking costs. You will have to track and maintain a separate record of these expenses.
